GOVERNMENT URGED TO AUDIT TAILINGS DAM AFTER ENVIRONMENTAL DISASTER

.

The Media Network Action on Climate Change (MENACC) is calling for a comprehensive audit of all tailings dams in Zambia following a recent partial collapse that released mining waste into the Chibuluma stream, affecting aquatic life and the environment.

MENACC cites concerns over the incident’s impact and notes a similar disaster occurred just over a year ago.

MENACC’s Executive Coordinator, Kennedy Phiri, has commended the government’s swift response but stresses more needs to be done to address root causes and ensure accountability.

Mr Phiri is urging the government to strengthen regulations, increase transparency, and support affected communities.

The call comes after the government directed the responsible company to take full responsibility for the damage.

.

He wants affected communities to have access to information about mining risks and impacts.

He emphasizes the need for sustainability and environmental protection in Zambia’s mining sector, urging the government and companies to prioritize these concerns.
