GOVERNMENT LAUNCHES MULTI-AGENCY RESPONSE TO FLOODING IN KAMWALA SOUTH

.

The Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) says it has initiated a coordinated multi-stakeholder response to the flooding affecting parts of Kamwala South in Lusaka, with urgent works currently underway to unblock key drainage systems.

DMMU,Regional Coordinator for Lusaka, Dr Kangacepe Zulu says members of the public should avoid indiscriminate disposal of waste and support the enforcement of public health and environmental regulations.

He says in line with its national coordination mandate, DMMU has mobilized key partners, including the Zambia National Service (ZNS), Lusaka City Council Directorate of Engineering, Lusaka Fire Brigade, Lusaka Integrated Solid Waste Management Company, and local leadership, to address the blocked drainage channels along Esther Lungu Road.

He says , ZNS has also deployed heavy duty earth moving equipment such as excavators, TLBs, and tipper trucks to clear the main drainage channel, which serves as a primary stormwater outlet for the area.

The works are ongoing and are expected to significantly reduce stormwater accumulation in affected parts of Kamwala South by restoring the free flow of water through the drainage system.

.

Approximately 230 households in Kamwala South have been affected by the flooding situation.
