GOVERNMENT CRACKS DOWN: FUEL HOARDING BANNED AMID MIDDLE EAST CRISIS

.

Government has warned fuel suppliers and filling station operators against creating artificial shortages by hoarding petroleum products in anticipation of possible price increases.

Energy Minister Makozo Chikote says Zambia’s petroleum supply remains secure despite escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, where most of the country’s fuel imports originate.

The Minister explains that any prolonged disruption along the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil transit route, could affect international crude oil prices, freight charges and insurance premiums, potentially leading to upward pressure on local pump prices in the medium to long term.

However, he has assured the nation that there is no immediate threat to fuel availability or price adjustments this month, as existing stocks were procured at lower international prices.

As of 5th March 2026, Zambia’s stock levels stand at approximately 326 million litres of diesel, equivalent to 60 days of cover; 32.8 million litres of petrol, equal to 19 days; 10.4 million litres of kerosene, covering 14 days; and 1.6 million litres of Jet A-1, covering 9 days.

The Minister has further indicated that government is negotiating supply arrangements with Dangote, exploring alternative supply routes, and closely monitoring global market developments.

He has further indicted that should tension in the middle east prolonged, possible policy interventions and exchange rate gains may help cushion the impact of sustained global price increases.
