Government Commissions New Mumbwa Mineral Market Centre

.

he Zambian government has successfully completed the Mumbwa Mineral Market Centre, marking a significant milestone in strengthening the nation’s artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) sector.

In a statement, Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development Principal Public Relations Officer, Shamwinda Tembo, confirmed that the facility is now fully connected to the national power grid. The center is currently in the final stages of administrative and logistical preparation ahead of its official commissioning.

Mr. Tembo added that once operations commence, the center is expected to begin purchasing processed gold directly from artisanal and small-scale miners. To ensure transparency and fair pricing, the Ministry is finalizing arrangements to deploy specialized officers tasked with identifying and verifying the mineral content of all gold presented for sale.

Meanwhile, significant progress has also been recorded at the Rufunsa Mineral Market Centre, where prefabricated materials have already been procured. This project is part of a broader government initiative to establish structured and reliable mineral market hubs across the country.

Construction of the Mumbwa and Rufunsa centers began in April and May 2024, respectively. The government remains confident that these facilities will enhance miners’ earnings, formalize the sector, and contribute positively to the national economy.
