Former Defense Minister Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba has appealed against his conviction and sentence on corruption related charges.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Court recently sentenced Mr. Mwamba to five years imprisonment with hard labour on charges of conflict of interest and possession of property reasonably suspected to be proceeds of crime.

On charges of conflict of interest, the count found that Mr. Mwamba, then as Minister of Defense, was not supposed to allow his companies nor relatives to engage in business with the ministry he supervised.

But Mr. Mwamba has filed nine grounds of appeal among them accusing the lower court of having erred in fact when it failed to attach any evidence on the charges of failure to declare conflict of interest stating that such interest was declared and the matter was previously closed after investigation in 2013
