Four men narrowly escaped death after a midnight earth collapse at Pit 6 in Luanshya, where they were illegally mining.
The incident was reported to the Mpatamatu Police Station, prompting a swift rescue operation. Emergency responders pulled the injured miners from the rubble and rushed them to Roan Antelope Hospital, where they are currently recovering in stable condition.
Copperbelt Police Commanding Officer, Peacwell Mweemba, confirmed the incident, stating that the four miners, aged between 19 and 24, sustained various injuries, including cuts, bruises, and leg wounds.
The incident has once again highlighted the dangers of illegal mining activities in the region. Many in the Luanshya community are urging for safer economic opportunities to discourage individuals from resorting to such risky endeavors.
Copperbelt Minister, Elisha Matambo, expressed deep concern over the ongoing incidents involving illegal miners. He emphasized the need for stricter measures to prevent such accidents and protect the lives of those involved in illegal mining activities.
