Former Katombola Constituency Development Fund (CDF) Committee Chairperson Sophia Jani has appeared for trial before the Livingstone Magistrate Court on charges related to alleged corrupt practices.
Ms. Jani is facing one count of failure to disclose interest, contrary to Section 5(5), Subparagraphs 1, 2, and 3 of the Constituency Development Fund Act No. 11 of 2018.
Allegations are that on June 19, 2023, in her capacity as Chairperson of the Katombola CDF Committee, the accused failed to disclose her interest during a committee meeting. She is alleged to have participated in deliberations that led to the awarding of an empowerment loan worth approximately K190,000 to her company, Mwabonwa Cultural Experience—a matter concerning Kazungula Town Council, a public institution.
Ms. Jani is being represented by Monde Kamwi and Kalaluka Mubita of Kamwi Andeleki Legal Practitioners.
The matter has been adjourned to June 23, 2025, for mention and July 4, 2025, for continued trial.
