FISHING BAN FUELS TENSION IN ITEZHI TEZHI

.

A wave of confusion has swept through local fishermen operating in Kafue National Park in Itezhi-Tezhi District, Southern Province, following a decision to reduce the number of fishermen permitted to operate in the area.

Several fishermen have been left off the approved list, leaving them uncertain about when—or if—they will be allowed to resume fishing. The lack of clear communication from park authorities has fueled tensions among the fishing community.

The fishermen are now appealing to the Kafue National Park authorities to follow the established procedures for rotating fishing groups within the park, a system designed to ensure fairness and sustainable resource management.

Area Warden Moses Kaoma acknowledged the confusion and explained that it stemmed from misunderstandings regarding the selection process.

Mr. Kaoma also cited declining fish stocks as the reason for maintaining the limit and ruled out increasing the number of fishing permits at this time.
