FDD CLAIMS VICTORY AS NUNDWE WINS CHAWAMA PARLIAMENTARY SEAT

.

The Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) has won the Chawama Constituency parliamentary by-election, with its candidate Bright Nundwe securing victory, according to official results released by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ).

Mr. Nundwe polled 8,085 votes, defeating the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) candidate Muunda Morgan, who came second with 6,542 votes.

Announcing the results in the early hours of Friday, Returning Officer Lewis Lupando said the poll was conducted in accordance with the Electoral Process Act and its regulations.

The Citizens First (CF) candidate Mulenga Davison K finished third with 1,534 votes.

Other candidates trailed behind, with Independent candidate George Mwenya polling 466 votes, Siatwaambo Elijah (Independent) receiving 428 votes, and Mutete Mohammad of the New Congress Party (NCP) securing 319 votes.

.

Meanwhile, Ndiweni Alfred M of the Exodus Party for Peace and Prosperity (EPPP) obtained 239 votes, and Musukuma Ntazana M of the Leadership Movement (LM) polled 100 votes, while James Phiri of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) received 93 votes.

In total, 18,096 votes were cast in the by-election, with 290 ballot papers rejected as invalid.

Following the declaration, Mr. Lupando formally announced Mr. Nundwe as the duly elected Member of Parliament for Chawama Constituency, signing the official result form dated 16 January 2026.

The Chawama by-election was widely praised by stakeholders for its peaceful conduct, with security agencies and electoral officials commended for maintaining law and order.

However, voter turnout was low, with only about 18,000 voters out of more than 92,000 registered voters casting their ballots.

Mr. Nundwe takes over from Tasila Lungu, daughter of former President Edgar Lungu, who lost the seat after the Speaker of the National Assembly declared it vacant.

Ms. Lungu has been in South Africa following the death of her father in June 2028, as the courts consider whether he should be buried in South Africa or Zambia.
