FAZ TO REVIEW SUPERSPORT BROADCAST DEAL FOR LOCAL GAMES

The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) is set to review its broadcast partnership with SuperSport at the end of the 2024/25 MTN Super League season, with the possibility of exploring alternative options. This decision comes amid growing concerns from fans over the introduction of AI-powered cameras by the broadcaster, a move that has sparked widespread debate about the overall quality of match coverage.

Many supporters have taken to social media and other platforms to express their dissatisfaction, pointing out a noticeable decline in broadcast quality compared to previous seasons. Complaints range from poor camera angles and delayed tracking of the ball to a lack of crucial replays that enhance the viewing experience. The use of AI cameras, while innovative, has failed to meet the expectations of a passionate fan base that has grown accustomed to a certain standard of production.

During an interview on Flava FM in Kitwe, FAZ President Andrew Kamanga acknowledged these concerns, emphasizing that the matter would be thoroughly reviewed before the start of the next season. He assured fans that the association remains committed to ensuring that the league’s broadcast quality aligns with global standards. Kamanga also revealed that SuperSport has recognized the issues raised and has committed to working towards restoring the previous quality.

While AI-driven broadcasting is intended to increase efficiency and reduce costs, its implementation in the Zambian Super League has raised questions about whether technology alone can fully replace traditional camerawork. Some football analysts argue that while automation has its advantages, human-operated cameras still play a crucial role in capturing the intensity and emotions of the game—elements that AI technology struggles to replicate effectively.

As FAZ prepares to conduct its review, there is speculation about whether the association will consider alternative broadcasters or if SuperSport will successfully address the current shortcomings. The coming months will be crucial in determining the future of football broadcasting in Zambia, as fans, clubs, and stakeholders eagerly await a resolution that balances technological advancements with the high-quality coverage they have come to expect.
