A Lusaka family accused of concealing the death of George Kalaba, whose remains were found in skeletal form inside his home in Garden Luangwa Township, could face up to one month in jail if convicted of failing to report his death to authorities.
Legal Charges and Potential Sentences
The late Kalaba’s three daughters and a family friend are currently facing charges under Section 9 of the Birth and Death Registration Act, Chapter 51 of the Laws of Zambia, which mandates the reporting of all deaths to civil authorities. If found guilty, they risk a sentence of up to one month in prison.
However, the case has taken a more serious turn for Kalaba’s wife, Sylvia Mutumba Kalaba, who is facing a charge of manslaughter, a grave offense under Section 199 of the Penal Code, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia. If convicted, she could face a life sentence in prison.
Court Proceedings and High Court Referral
During their initial court appearance on March 20, 2025, at the Lusaka Magistrate Court, the charges were formally read out to the accused individuals. The magistrate explained the legal implications before referring the case to the High Court for trial. A date for the proceedings is yet to be announced as the case awaits inclusion in the next criminal session.
Juvenile Daughter Discharged
Meanwhile, in a development that brings some relief to the family, Kalaba’s juvenile daughter, who was initially involved in the case, has been discharged. The decision came following consent from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), who determined that she would not face charges.

The discovery of Kalaba’s skeletal remains inside his residence has shocked the community, raising questions about how his death went unnoticed for an extended period.
