The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) has revealed that it has observed a growing pattern of elderly people in Zambia becoming addicted to Benylin with codeine.
DEC Director General Nason Banda says the commission has noted that a significant number of individuals undergoing counselling for substance abuse are elderly.
Mr. Banda says the commission is deeply concerned about the trend, describing it as a serious public health issue that requires urgent attention.
Meanwhile, the commission has arrested a notorious Tanzanian drug trafficking kingpin identified as Ahmed Muharram, a businessman of Lusaka’s Lilayi area.
According to the commission, Muharram was found concealing over 1,300 kilogrammes of high-grade cannabis.
The commission has also pounced on another suspected trafficker, identified as Nsanga Benjamin Bowa, aged 52, of Lusaka’s Kwamwena Meanwood area, for allegedly trafficking 55 boxes of Benylin with codeine.
