The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has warned of legal consequences against individuals usurping the Commission’s powers by adopting names of constituencies that have not yet been officially created amid the ongoing delimitation exercise.
Speaking when she officially opened the Provincial Delimitation sittings in Ndola, Copperbelt Province, ECZ Chairperson Mwangala Zaloumis said the use of non-existent constituencies by aspiring political candidates could lead to anarchy in the delimitation process.
Ms. Zaloumis explained that the delimitation process is still at the consultative stage, adding that the names of the proposed seventy (70) new constituencies will be published in the Government Gazette on April 15, 2026.
She said the constituencies will only take effect once Parliament dissolves in May this year.
Meanwhile, the Commission is in Ndola to receive provincial delimitation reports from 10 districts on the Copperbelt.
So far, the Commission has received reports from Southern, Lusaka, Copperbelt, Central and North-Western provinces, with the exercise expected to conclude on March 23, 2026.
