ECZ WARNS AGAINST FERRYING CADRES TO NTANDA WARD BY-ELECTION

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has issued a strong warning to political parties contesting the upcoming Ntanda Ward by-election in Mpongwe District, urging them to avoid bringing in external cadres from other areas. ECZ raised concerns that such actions could incite violence and disrupt the peace during the election process, which is set to take place in early January 2025.

During a recent briefing with aspiring candidates, political parties, and various stakeholders, ECZ Vice Chairperson Ali Simwinga emphasized the importance of maintaining peace in the region, especially given the solemn nature of this by-election. The election follows the sad passing of the previous councillor, Adrian Chilubwa, in November 2024, and is viewed as a crucial event for the community.

Simwinga stressed that external cadres—individuals who are not familiar with the local environment or issues—often exploit their lack of connection to the community to incite unrest. Their presence can lead to unnecessary tensions, violence, and the disruption of the democratic process. The ECZ has been closely monitoring the situation and is committed to ensuring a peaceful and transparent election.

The nominations for the Ntanda Ward by-election are scheduled for Tuesday, January 7, 2025, with polling set to take place on Thursday, January 9, 2025. As the election approaches, political parties are encouraged to engage in responsible campaigning that prioritizes the well-being of the community and the integrity of the electoral process.

The ECZ’s caution comes at a critical time when tensions in the political landscape of Zambia have been rising, with concerns about electoral violence and misconduct becoming more prevalent. The Commission’s call for peaceful, fair, and community-centered campaigning underscores its commitment to safeguarding the democratic rights of all Zambians.

In the run-up to the by-election, political parties are expected to adhere to the ECZ’s guidelines and ensure that their campaign strategies do not escalate into disruptive or violent behavior. The Commission will continue to monitor the situation closely, working with law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety and security of voters and candidates alike.
