The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has condemned the violence that occurred during the nomination process in Mtilizi ward of Nyimba District against Citizen First (CF) supporters and Tonse Alliance.
At a Press briefing in Nyimba, ECZ Commissioner Ndiyoi Mutiti said the Commission firmly upholds the principles of peaceful coexistence among political parties and reiterates that elections must be conducted in an environment free of violence, intimidation and provocation.
Ambassador Mutiti says it is unfortunate that the incident occurred after concentrated efforts by the Commission to engage political parties and stakeholders on the undesirability of engaging in political violence.
The Commission has commended the Zambia Police Service for swift action and restoring calm and peace.
Tonse Alliance Eastern Province Chairperson Joseph Makukula yesterday expressed disappointment that UPND cadres resorted to violence without any provocation in presence of their senior leaders and ECZ Commissioners as well as the Zambia Police Service but no arrests have been made.
