School Head Teachers and guardians along the border lines of Eastern Province have been urged to maintain high levels of hygiene owing to the cholera outbreak in the neighboring Malawi.

Eastern Province Education Officer, Brainely Malambo, says all schools in border areas should ensure access to water is available to prevent a cholera outbreak.

Mr. Malambo says the health and safety of the children is important adding that a child must be safe both at home and school as they spend majority of their time in these places.

Atleast 825 people have died in Malawi since the outbreak of Cholera with 16 new cases recorded according to the official statistics of that country.

Because of the porousness of the borders, the Ministry of Health is implementing an incident management system to adequately respond in case of an outbreak.

This is according to Eastern Province Health Director Mathews Ng’ambi.
