DMMU SHELTERS KABANANA FLOOD VICTIMS

Eleven families in Lusaka’s Kabanana West have been displaced by severe flooding caused by heavy rains. The affected families have been evacuated to safety and are now temporarily residing in tents set up at the Chipata School grounds. This marks one of the most significant humanitarian interventions in the area since the onset of the rainy season, which has brought widespread devastation to many parts of Lusaka.

The Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) has been at the forefront of providing relief to the affected families. The unit has delivered essential supplies, including food and non-food items, to help the victims manage during this challenging time. The aid packages include mealie meal, cooking oil, beans, blankets, and other necessities to ensure that families have basic provisions while they remain displaced.

As the rains persist, more families in Kabanana West and surrounding areas have come forward seeking assistance. The flooding has not only displaced families but has also led to the destruction of homes, loss of property, and disruption of livelihoods. Many residents are grappling with the harsh reality of rebuilding their lives amidst ongoing rainfall, which continues to pose a threat to already vulnerable communities.

Local authorities and humanitarian organizations are calling for increased support to address the growing needs of those affected. Efforts are being made to assess the extent of the damage and identify additional resources required to aid the victims. The DMMU has emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to provide shelter, food, clean water, and medical assistance to those in dire need.

In addition to immediate relief, discussions are underway to explore long-term solutions to mitigate the effects of flooding in the region. This includes improving drainage systems, creating awareness about disaster preparedness, and relocating families living in flood-prone areas to safer locations.

The families currently residing at the Chipata School grounds expressed their gratitude for the prompt response but highlighted the challenges of living in temporary shelters. They urged the government and well-wishers to expedite efforts to address the crisis and provide lasting solutions to prevent future occurrences.

The situation remains critical as meteorologists forecast continued rainfall in the coming weeks. This has heightened concerns about the potential displacement of more families and the need for additional resources to respond to the crisis. Authorities have urged residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and follow safety guidelines to minimize the risk of further casualties and property damage.

With the rainy season far from over, the plight of the displaced families in Kabanana West serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of climate change and the urgent need for comprehensive disaster management strategies. The government, in partnership with humanitarian organizations and local communities, is committed to ensuring that no family is left behind in the ongoing relief and recovery efforts.

For those willing to contribute, the DMMU has called on individuals, organizations, and businesses to come forward with donations to support the affected families. Every effort counts in providing relief to those who have lost so much to the relentless floods.
