Pupils at Mtendere and Chitukuko Primary Schools in Lusaka’s Mtendere Compound are being forced to sit on the floor during lessons due to an acute shortage of desks, a situation that has raised serious concern among parents and community members.
The problem has become increasingly pronounced, with learners enduring uncomfortable conditions that residents say are negatively affecting concentration and overall academic performance.
Concerned residents, including parents with children at the affected schools, have described the situation as troubling and demoralizing for the pupils. They noted that despite government commitments to improve learning environments, many public schools in the area continue to struggle with basic infrastructure.
Mtendere Ward 34 Councilor Bornface Chibeka has acknowledged the challenge, revealing that efforts to address the desk shortage through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) have so far yielded no results.
Councilor Chibeka disclosed that a formal request for 500 desks for schools in the ward was submitted, but no deliveries have been made by the council to date.
He has since appealed to relevant authorities to urgently intervene, noting that the continued shortage directly contradicts the President’s directive that no child should be made to sit on the floor while attending school.
