A moment of impulsive response has landed a 21 year old Lusaka maid in jail for five years after being found guilty of assault on a child.
Betsheba Phiri was sentenced this morning to five years’ simple imprisonment for assaulting an 8 year old child who was in her care due to her employment.
On March 31, 2025, Betsheba assaulted the child using a knife when the child attempted to play with her.
When the matter came up for judgment, Magistrate Idah Phiri noted that the accused’s actions were reckless and negligent.
She stated that although there was no intention to harm, the accused acted in a reckless manner that caused harm to the child, thereby warranting the sentence.
