COURT CONVICTS TWO MEN FOR PRACTICING WITCHCRAFT WITH AIM TO HARM HH

.

The Lusaka Magistrate Court has convicted two men for practicing witchcraft with the alleged aim of harming President Hakainde Hichilema.

The convicts, Jasten Mabulesse Candunde, 42, of Maravia in Mozambique, and Leonard Phiri, 43, of Kafewa Village in Chief Nyanje’s area of Sinda District, Eastern Province, were found guilty of possession of charms and professing knowledge of witchcraft, contrary to the Witchcraft Act, Chapter 90 of the Laws of Zambia.

When the matter came up before Magistrate Fines Mayambu for judgment, the court ruled that the prosecution has proved its case against the accused beyond reasonable doubt, warranting their conviction.

In mitigation, the duo, through their lawyer, has pleaded for maximum leniency, arguing that even President Hichilema himself has stated that witchcraft does not exist.

Magistrate Mayambu has since adjourned the matter to September 15, 2025, for sentencing.
