COPPERBELT MINISTER SETS MAY DEADLINE FOR FEEDER ROAD WORKS

.

Copperbelt Minister Elisha Matambo has issued a directive to all councils across the province, instructing them to begin work on feeder roads by May this year. This move comes in response to the release of fuel funds under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), aimed at supporting road infrastructure development in various communities.

Speaking during a performance review meeting held in Ndola, Mr. Matambo emphasized that the directive is in line with President Hakainde Hichilema’s broader vision to improve road networks and enhance accessibility in rural and underserved areas. He explained that several councils and constituencies had earlier expressed concerns regarding inadequate resources, particularly for fueling equipment required to execute road works. In response, the government has now stepped in by releasing targeted funding to address these specific needs.

Mr. Matambo highlighted that improving feeder roads is a key priority for the government as it directly impacts economic activities, agricultural productivity, and access to essential services such as healthcare and education. He noted that efficient and well-maintained road infrastructure is vital for fostering local development and reducing transportation costs for goods and services in remote areas.

The meeting, which focused on the progress of projects being implemented by local authorities and Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs), served as a platform for stakeholders to evaluate the pace of development and identify areas requiring urgent attention. Mr. Matambo urged local authorities to take advantage of the released funds and begin immediate mobilization for road rehabilitation works. He further warned that councils failing to meet the May deadline would be held accountable for their inaction.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that all public resources are used transparently and efficiently, stressing that citizens expect tangible results from local authorities. Mr. Matambo also called for collaboration among councils, traditional leaders, and communities to ensure that the projects meet the needs of the people and are completed on time.

In closing, the Minister reiterated that the successful implementation of road projects under the CDF will not only improve connectivity but also create employment opportunities for local residents, thereby contributing to the province’s overall socio-economic growth.
