Public submissions to the Technical Committee on Drafting Amendments to the Constitution of Zambia have concluded at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre in Lusaka.
Committee Chairperson Judge Christopher Mushabati thanked citizens for their active participation, noting that the collected views will help shape a document reflecting the nation’s aspirations.
Councillors from Rufunsa and Luangwajoining virtually proposed that councillors be employed full-time and receive gratuity, while the Zambia Association of Manufacturers urged that ministerial appointments be based on merit.
However, JCTR Deputy Director Reverend Boyd Nyirenda criticised the process as rushed and politically driven, warning that constitutional reform must not be subjected to expediency.
Meanwhile, the Kazembe Lunda Royal Establishment stressed that the process should be driven by the collective will of the people, rather than the Executive through the Ministry of Justice.
