CHUNGU SEEKS HIGH COURT BAIL, CITES CAMPAIGN DISRUPTION

.

Former Zambia Security Intelligence Service Director General and Liberal Democrats Party presidential candidate Xavier Chungu has applied to the High Court for bail pending trial, arguing that his continued detention is negatively affecting his ability to campaign ahead of the August 13 general elections.

In an affidavit filed in support of a summons for admission to bail, Chungu states that he was arrested on May 28, 2026, and charged with communication of certain information contrary to Section 4(1) of the State Security Act.

He argues that despite being detained at Kabwata Police Station for more than 24 hours, he has not been brought before a competent court for trial, nor have police advanced reasons for the delay.

Chungu further says he was denied police bond despite presenting two working sureties with fixed abodes and traceable addresses.

He maintains that he is not a flight risk, citing his role as a presidential candidate whose campaign requires his physical presence and public engagement, and says failure to grant him bail would occasion grave injustice.
