After spending several days in police custody and securing bail from the Lusaka High Court, Liberal Democrats presidential candidate Xavier Chungu has reportedly been rearrested just minutes after regaining his freedom.
According to a statement issued by Chungu’s media team and posted on his Facebook page, the presidential candidate, who was released on Thursday following a court ruling granting him bail, was immediately served with fresh charges by authorities, adding to the eleven counts he was already facing.
The media team says Chungu’s legal representatives are reviewing the new charges and will respond through the appropriate legal channels, while maintaining that he remains innocent and entitled to freely campaign ahead of the August presidential election.
