Police in Choma have arrested a 22-year-old man of Mwapona Compound for slaughtering his mother’s dog with the intention of eating its meat.
The suspect, identified as Davison Mudenda, allegedly killed the dog on April 9, 2025.
According to police, his mother, Ivy Mudenda, saw him return home from piecework, play with the dog in the yard, and later disappear with it. He reappeared 30 minutes later carrying a box, which he left outside. Upon checking, she discovered the dog’s head and meat inside.
After confronting her son, he admitted he intended to cook and eat the dog. She alerted neighbors, who helped take him to Mwapona Police Post.
Southern Province Police Commissioner Auxensio Daka said a crowd gathered at the station after rumors spread that the suspect intended to sell the dog meat. Officers from Choma Police Station were called in for reinforcement.
Police confirmed the meat and dog’s head were found in the box. The suspect insisted he meant to eat the meat, and no evidence was found that he intended to sell it. He has since been moved to Choma Central Police Station for further investigations.
