This morning, traders at Kaumbwe Market in Chipata City staged a protest over delays in the completion of a market shelter project funded by the Constituency Development Fund (CDF). The traders expressed frustration as the contractor responsible for the project had abandoned the site, leaving them without sufficient shelter and water facilities. The situation has also affected workers contracted for the project, who have not been paid for two months since the work commenced.
The traders, who rely on the market for their livelihoods, highlighted the challenges they face daily, particularly the lack of shelter during harsh weather conditions and the absence of proper water supply, both of which are vital for the smooth operation of the market.
In response to the protest, Chipata City Council Acting Town Clerk, Donald Mwanza, assured the traders that the matter is being handled. He confirmed that the contractor will soon return to the site to resume and complete the project. Mwanza emphasized the council’s commitment to ensuring that the market shelter is completed promptly, and the needs of the traders are addressed.
The market shelter project is part of ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure at local markets under the CDF initiative, aiming to enhance the working conditions for traders and boost economic activity in the area. However, the abrupt halt in construction and delayed payments to workers have raised concerns about project management and contractor accountability.
This protest highlights the need for better oversight and communication between local authorities, contractors, and the community to prevent similar disruptions in the future.
