CHIPATA DOWNPOUR DAMAGES HOMES, WIPES OUT MAIZE, SOYA BEANS FIELDS

Eleven houses have been destroyed after a heavy downpour in Mbazima village in Luangeni constituency of Chipata district in Eastern Province.

In addition to the damaged houses, 35 hectares of fields were flooded, washing away all the crops.

Grace Phiri and Emma Zulu, whose houses were blown off as it was raining, describe the incident as scary, especially because all their basic belongings such as shelter and food were destroyed.

Chipata District Commissioner Elidah Banda has confirmed the calamity, adding that 35 hectares of maize and soya bean fields were also washed away.

The Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) has quickly aided the families with emergency food items while looking for seed for the affected farmers.

The Ministry of Green Economy, through the Zambia Meteorological Department, has been issuing weather alerts on possible floods across Zambia.
