A 25-year-old woman in Chasefu District 9f Eastern Province has been discovered floating in Katete stream, days after her husband allegedly lied about her whereabouts.
Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba has confirmed that Agness Nyirongo, who was in a polygamous marriage with Simon Zulu, 31, was found naked with her neck and legs tied to a large log.
The discovery was made by villagers on May 22, nearly a week after she was last seen alive.
According to police report filed at Emusa Police Post, Nyirongo had supper with her co-wife, Tryness Mwansa, 28, on the evening of May 15.
She then went to sleep with her husband at her house, located just 10 meters from the first wife’s home.
The next morning, Mwansa noticed her co-wife was missing.
When she asked Mr. Zulu where Nyirongo had gone, he claimed she had traveled to Malambo area in neighboring Chama district.
Mr. Zulu never filed a missing person report.
Police say the body showed no signs of drowning despite being in the stream.
However, Officers noted that while decomposition had begun, the body appeared as though Nyirongo had been beaten to death before being dumped.
Due to the state of the remains, family members have been allowed to bury the body, but the grave is marked for possible exhumation pending postmortem results.
Mr. Zulu has been picked and is assisting with investigations.
