
An 88-year-old man of Chimwemwe village is fighting for his life at Chama District Hospital after a violent mob assault on allegations of witchcraft.
Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba confirmed that the attack, a severe case of vigilante justice, occurred on Sunday, September 7th, around 6hrs.
The report was made by a concerned citizen that a crowd was brutally beating an unidentified elderly man.
Police officers rushed to the scene, where they found a residence surrounded by a mob actively assaulting the victim.
The officers intervened, dispersing the crowd and rescuing the man, who was already unconscious and suffering from critical injuries.
The victim was found with a severely swollen head, bleeding profusely from the nose and mouth and with cuts on his forehead.
He was swiftly transported to Chama District Hospital for emergency treatment.
At the hospital, he was formally identified by his son as Trywell Zyambo, an 88-year-old resident of Chimwemwe Village under Chief Kambombo.
Police has launched investigations and no arrests made so far.
