A 37-year-old woman has allegedly been abducted from her home in Chadiza District over a K700 debt her husband failed to repay.
Edina Phiri was reportedly taken on Sunday, December 28, 2025, around 10:00 hours by two men from her residence at Sanzu Water Affairs in Chief Mlolo’s area.
Her husband, Elias Sakala, aged 38, has identified one of the alleged abductors as Clement Soko of Kapinde Village in Chipata District.
Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba has confirmed the incident to Diamond News, stating that the abduction is linked to a debt Sakala incurred in October 2025.
Sakala had borrowed K700 from Soko to boost his sugar trading business.
After failing to repay the money, Sakala received a phone call from Soko on Sunday while working in his field, demanding that they meet at his home.
As Sakala rushed back, he met his 13-year-old son, who was crying and informed him that his mother had been taken by unknown individuals.
Sakala later contacted Soko, who allegedly demanded a ransom of K1,000 for Phiri’s release before switching off his phone.
The suspects reportedly fled the scene on an unregidtered motorcycle.
Upon arriving home, Sakala found the house locked and his wife missing, with her mobile phone switched off.
After waiting for several hours without any communication from the abductors, Sakala reported the matter to Chadiza Police Station at around 18:00 hours.
Police have since launched a manhunt for the suspects.
