The Ministry of Local Government has temporarily suspended the Cash for Work program across the country to allow for the reconciliation and review of the program guidelines.
Speaking at a press briefing, Ministry of Local Government Permanent Secretary for Administration, Dr. Gabriel Pollen, says the suspension period will be used to conduct a proper review and implement a more robust system aimed at preventing the double dipping of government resources.
Dr. Pollen says the Ministry currently has an outstanding balance of K23 million in unpaid wages under the program, adding that funds have already been allocated to settle the arrears.
He says some beneficiaries already on other government social schemes, such as the Social Cash Transfer, were also enrolled in the Cash for Work program a situation that should not be allowed therefore the review period will help consolidate data across ministries to ensure such overlaps are completely eliminated.
