
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has expressed deep regret over the loss of human life during post-election protests in Tanzania, extending heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims.
In a statement, Mr. Youssouf has underscored the importance of upholding fundamental rights and freedoms, including the right to peaceful assembly and expression.
He has urged Tanzanian authorities to ensure these rights are protected within the framework of the law and citizens to exercise their rights peacefully and responsibly.
The AU Chairperson has recalled the principles enshrined in the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance, particularly the respect for the rule of law, human rights, fundamental freedoms, and political pluralism, described as the foundation of democratic and stable societies.
He has reaffirmed the AU’s hreadiness to support the people and government of Tanzania in their efforts to preserve peace, national cohesion, and democracy.
Meanwhile, Mr. Youssouf has congratulated President Samia Suluhu Hassan on her re-election victory and reaffirmed the AU’s continued support for Tanzania.
