About 200 graves at Kimiteto Lower Cost Area in Solwezi District have collapsed following a heavy downpour that occurred last night, leaving families and community members distressed.
In an interview with Diamond Media in Solwezi, Moses Chinyama a resident of Kimiteto area says the intense rainfall caused severe soil erosion at the graveyard, weakening the structures and leading to the collapse of several graves.
The affected area is reported to have loose soil, which easily gives way during heavy rains, a situation residents describe as an ongoing challenge.
The community have since called on the Solwezi Municipal Council and other relevant local authorities to urgently intervene by providing suitable materials that can help strengthen the quality of graves.
Stating that such support would help prevent further collapses and reduce the impact of soil erosion, especially during the rainy season.
However, Some residents have expressed concern that without immediate action, more graves could be affected should the rains continue, describing the situation as both emotionally distressing and a public health concern.
Meanwhile, the Solwezi Municipal Council has started dumping soil to help cover the affected graves and is urging members of the public to visit the graveyard to assist in covering the graves of their loved ones.
