Tragedy has struck Chinani Village in Masaiti District, where a family of four drowned in the newly commissioned Kafulafuta Dam while attempting to cross in a dug-out canoe.
The victims have been identified as 30-year-old Lotson Kandala and his 26-year-old wife, Merody Mambwe, who were returning home with their two children when their canoe capsized on May 9, 2025, last week Friday.
Masaiti District Commissioner Enny Matutu described the incident as heartbreaking and a devastating loss for the community.
Copperbelt Province Minister Elisha Matambo, who visited the bereaved family, said the government is deeply saddened by the loss of life—particularly so soon after a development milestone intended to benefit the district.
He announced that the government, in partnership with Kafubu Water and Sanitation Company, will cover all funeral expenses.
All four bodies have since been recovered and will be laid to rest tomorrow in the Shilashi area of Chinani Village, Masaiti District.
