RESIDENTS PROTEST DEATH IN POLICE CUSTODY IN PALABANA

Angry residents of Palabana, Chongwe District, stormed the Palabana Police Post on Saturday, throwing stones and causing significant damage to the facility following the death of 25-year-old Daniel Chalinga in police custody.

Daniel, who was arrested on Friday night for alleged trespassing, died under unclear circumstances.

His father, Briton Chalinga, revealed that the family was only informed of his death after his body had already been taken to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) mortuary.

The family has expressed concerns over the police’s handling of the case, claiming Daniel had shown signs of mental disorientation.

They believe that instead of detaining him, the police should have sought medical evaluation for him.

The incident has sparked outrage in the community, leading to the protest at the police post.
