The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) has made a significant breakthrough in the fight against drug trafficking, arresting 13 individuals, including a Tanzanian national, in connection with a cross-border drug smuggling syndicate.

The syndicate was allegedly involved in smuggling illegal drugs from various countries in the Southern African region into Zambia through the Chirundu Border. In a recent operation, DEC officers seized a staggering 700 kilograms of high-grade cannabis.

One of the key figures in the drug cartel is Mwakitalu Ayubu Bernard, a 35-year-old Tanzanian national. He was apprehended with 335 pre-packaged bundles of high-grade cannabis, weighing over 400 kilograms, cleverly concealed within duvets.

The arrests and seizure of the large quantity of drugs highlight the scale of the drug trafficking problem in Zambia and the region. The DEC’s efforts to dismantle this syndicate are a crucial step in combating drug abuse and its associated criminal activities.
