Lieutenant General Geoffrey Zyeele, the Commander of the Zambia Army, has highlighted the urgent need to strengthen security measures across the Copperbelt Province due to the presence of illegal immigrants, some of whom are believed to be ex-convicts.
During a courtesy call on Copperbelt Province Minister Elisha Matambo, Lt. Gen. Zyeele expressed deep concern over the security situation in Mufulira District, which has been identified as a hotspot for gang activity. He also raised the alarming issue of individuals illegally wearing military uniforms, a practice that poses a significant threat to public safety.
The Army Commander warned that illegal immigrants pose a potential danger to the security of not only the Copperbelt Province but also the entire country. He emphasized that these individuals are more likely to engage in criminal activities, including drug trafficking, human trafficking, and other illicit activities.
In response, Copperbelt Minister Elisha Matambo commended Lieutenant General Zyeele for his proactive approach in engaging with officers and addressing the security challenges in the province. Matambo highlighted that the Army Commander’s commitment to public safety is evident in his efforts to maintain peace and order in the region.
The Zambian Army’s intensified security operations in the Copperbelt Province are a crucial step in addressing the growing concerns related to illegal immigration and criminal activity. By working closely with local authorities and communities, the Army aims to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents in the region.
