Eng. Elijah C. Sichone, the Director General of the Energy Regulation Board (ERB), has assured the public that the recent decision to approve ZESCO’s application for emergency electricity tariff adjustments will not adversely affect low-income households.
In a statement released today, Sichone explained that the ERB has carefully considered the impact of the tariff adjustments on different income groups and has taken measures to ensure that those with lower incomes will not bear a disproportionate burden.
“The ERB has approved ZESCO’s application for emergency electricity tariff adjustments in a manner that protects low-income households,” Sichone stated. “The households that will be paying higher amounts are those with higher incomes and consume more units.”
The decision comes amid rising energy costs and the need to ensure the sustainability of the country’s electricity supply. While the ERB acknowledges the potential impact on consumers, it believes that the adjustments are necessary to maintain the financial viability of ZESCO and to continue providing essential electricity services to the Zambian population.
