A tragic house fire has claimed the life of an eight-month-old infant in Lusaka’s Kanyama Compound, leaving the community in mourning. According to police reports, the incident occurred when the mother, Agness Musonda, aged 22, briefly stepped out to purchase a mealie meal pack for supper. Unfortunately, an unattended candle left burning in the bedroom where the baby was sleeping is believed to have caused the fire.

At the time of the incident, the child’s father was also not at home. The fire quickly engulfed the room, leading to the devastating loss of the infant’s life.

The Lusaka City Council (LCC) has confirmed the tragic event, which serves as a somber reminder of the dangers posed by unattended candles and the importance of fire safety measures, particularly in households without access to stable electricity. Authorities are urging the public to exercise caution, especially when using open flames for lighting in homes.

This heartbreaking incident has sent shockwaves through the Kanyama community, with many expressing their condolences to the grieving family during this difficult time.
