The bakery industry is faced with a huge crisis following unstable electricity supply.

One of the bakers in Lusaka’s Marapodi Compound has lost thousands of Kwacha in dough, following a power cut in the middle of baking bread.

Doreen Nankala says the business is threatened as no production has been taking place in the last few days, incurring losses.

She says the government must come in and support such businesses with alternative power sources before they find themselves on the streets.

Meanwhile, Chinsali bakeries have turned to use of charcoal ovens amid extended hours of load shedding but lament that the shift is labour intensive resulting in a drop in business.

The country is currently experiencing load shedding due to reduced water levels at Kariba Dam.
