Communities in Mambwe District in Eastern Zambia are struggling to coexist with wildlife.

Lions are causing chaos in communities in the game management area of South Luangwa National Park, killing domestic animals and leaving families without a source of income.

In the latest incident, 17 goats were killed at Mnkhanya Palace, and in the past four days, pigs and goats have been killed in the Chiwawatala area.

Chief Mnkhanya has expressed his frustration, saying that the loss of livestock is exacerbating the already difficult situation faced by families due to the drought.

However, safari guides in Mambwe district are of the view that the keeping of livestock by people who have migrated from the plateau to the game management areas is attracting carnivores for easy prey in goats and pigs among others.
