Chainda residents this evening protested over an alleged abduction of an unknown person whom they claim was kidnapped.

Some eyewitnesses spoken to have told Diamond News, that an unknown man from one of the houses in the area, was seen shouting for help that he had been abducted, before he was stopped by a security guard of the same residence and taken back into the premises.

The crowd narrates that the incident instantly attracted scores of people who confronted the owner of the house and were informed by the family that the screaming man is a relative with a mental disability who attempted to flee from the residence.

However, the explanation did not convince the apprehensive mob that demanded the said person be released and in the process the crowd began pelting stones at the residence.

However, police officers rushed to the scene and managed to disperse the rioters using teargas.

It is alleged during the confusion, a woman was injured by a teargas canister that hit her chest and was rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Police Deputy Spokersperson, Danny Mwale, confirms the said person heard shouting for help is indeed suspected to have a mental disability and is currently held at a named police station for his safety.

Mr. Mwale, reveals that an investigation has been instituted to ascertain what triggered the misunderstanding between the crowd and the said family.

The extent of damage on the property is yet to be established.
