Drivers in Mazabuka District in Southern Province have protested following the death of their two colleagues who died in a road traffic accident around 22 hours on Thursday.

Details are that a Byta bus and a Mitsubishi Canter collided at CDC junction where police had mounted a checkpoint.

Some unhappy men that had been spoken to claim the incident happened when the driver of the canter wanted to park at a spot where he was instructed by police, but in the process, he hit into an oncoming Byta bus from the southern direction.

They add that the driver of the light truck died on the spot, while the bus driver later succumbed to his injuries at Mazabuka General Hospital.

The agitated group accuses the police of having been the cause of the accident, hence Friday morning a mob briefly blocked the entrance to Mazabuka Police Station demanding an end to night checkpoints.

Earlier local leaders among them Mazabuka Mayor Vincent Lilanda, District Commisioner Oliver Mulomba and UPND officials had a tough time to calm the incensed drivers.

Names of the deceased and the condition of passengers on the bus are yet to be released by authorities.
