In a bizarre incident, a Zambian who was a student in Russia has died at the battlefront of that country that is at war with Ukraine.
Foreign Affairs Minister Stanley Kakubo has announced the death of 23 year old Lemekhani Nyirenda who lost his life on 22nd September, 2022.
Speaking at a press briefing in Lusaka Mr. Kakubo says it has been established that the remains of Mr. Nyirenda have been transported to the Russian Border Town of Rostov in readiness of repatriation.
He discloses that at the time of Mr. Nyirenda’s demise, he was a student pursuing Nuclear Engineering at the Moscow Engineering Physics Institute (MEPH) in the Russian Federation.
The minister adds government is yet to establish the circumstances in which Mr. Nyirenda found himself in the battlefield since at the time of his death he was serving a nine jail term at Tyer Medium Security Prison for having contravened the laws of the Russian Federation.
Mr. Kakubo further adds that the Russian authorities have been requested to provide information how a Zambian serving a prison sentence was recruited to fight in the war against Ukraine.
