The ruling United Party for National Development—UPND—says it will not allow vendors to trade on the streets of Lusaka’s Central Business District—CBD—in the interest of maintaining cleanliness.
UPND Secretary General Batuke Imenda says the party supports initiatives aimed at keeping the CBD clean.
Mr Imenda says the party will not compromise cleanliness in an effort to please vendors, arguing that there are enough trading spaces in markets to accommodate them.
He says the dirty environment in the city has contributed to perennial cholera outbreaks.
Mr Imenda has also disowned people clad in UPND regalia who protested the removal of vendors from the streets last week.
Meanwhile, Lusaka City Council has set tomorrow, October 3, 2026, as the date for the removal of vendors from the streets as part of efforts to clean up the city.
