Lusaka Archbishop Dr. Alick Banda has spent a night at Chimbokaila Correctional Facility despite being granted bail by the Lusaka Magistrates Court on Monday, following delays in completing his release formalities.
The delays reportedly arose from additional conditions introduced during the bail process, which could not be fulfilled before the prison closed for the day.
The formalities are expected to continue today, paving the way for his release once all requirements have been met.
Dr. Banda appeared before the Lusaka Magistrates Court on Monday, where he pleaded not guilty to a charge of possession of property reasonably believed to have been unlawfully obtained, in connection with a motor vehicle allegedly linked to the Zambia Revenue Authority, ZRA.
Magistrate Mwandu Nakazwe granted him bail in the sum of 80-thousand kwacha, with three working sureties, each executing a 50-thousand-kwacha bond.
He was also ordered to surrender his travel documents, with the matter adjourned to October 14, while trial is scheduled to commence on November 3.
