The Truck Drivers Association of Zambia (TDAZ) has called on the Zambia Police Service, ZICTA and other law enforcement agencies to take action against individuals publishing what it describes as false, defamatory and malicious content targeting truck drivers on social media.
Addressing the Press in Lusaka, TDAZ Vice President Sunday Simukoko says the continued circulation of such content, particularly on Facebook and TikTok, is tarnishing the image of the trucking industry and exposing drivers to cyberbullying and defamation.
Mr Simukoko says truck drivers are critical to the economy as they facilitate the movement of cargo from one point to another, further calling for proper security and protection of truck drivers in the course of their duties.
Mr Simukoko has also reminded the public that Zambia’s Cyber Security and Cyber Crimes Act provide legal protection against cyberbullying, false publication and defamation.
Recently POLICE in Ndola, Copperbelt Province arrested 24-year-old TikToker Natasha Nambeya, alias Nana Babe, for allegedly harassing truck drivers in which she accused truck drivers of stealing fuel, receiving low salaries and having poor personal hygiene.
In a statement, Copperbelt Police Commissioner Rae Hamoonga stated that Kasongo alleged that Nambeya’s videos caused emotional distress among members of the truck driving community.
Meanwhile, TDAZ says it is awaiting feedback from Government following the tripartite meeting held in August involving Government stakeholders, unions, associations and company representatives.
