Foreign Affairs Minister Mulambo Haimbe has cited Zambia’s peaceful elections and democratic record as the country seeks a seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2027-2029 term.
Addressing the United Nations General Assembly, Mr Haimbe says Zambia remains a peaceful, stable and sovereign nation, adding that the peaceful atmosphere before, during and after the recent general elections reflects the people’s commitment to democracy, national unity and constitutional governance.
Mr Haimbe thanked Zambians for participating in the elections and exercising their constitutional right to choose their leaders. He says the elections were in line with the principles of Article 21 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which provides that the authority of government should be based on the will of the people expressed through genuine and periodic elections.
The Minister also thanked international election observation missions for their support and contribution to Zambia’s democratic process. He says while political differences are a normal part of democracy, Zambia has continued to demonstrate that such differences can be resolved peacefully through established constitutional and legal institutions.
Mr Haimbe says Zambia’s democratic processes should not be viewed as signs of conflict or instability, stressing that Government remains committed to preserving the country’s long-standing tradition of peace. He says political disputes will continue to be handled through due process of the law and within the confines of the Constitution.
He further appealed for support for Zambia’s candidature to the UN Human Rights Council, saying the country’s commitment to peace, democracy and constitutional governance positions it to contribute to the promotion and protection of human rights at the international level.
