The Siavonga Subordinate Court has convicted and sentenced a Chirundu police officer to 12 months imprisonment with hard labour for corruption involving K800.
Francis Chisala, a police officer at Chirundu Police Station, was convicted on one count of Corrupt Practices by a Public Officer, contrary to Section 19(1) of the Anti-Corruption Act, Chapter 91 of the Laws of Zambia.
Lusaka High Court Judge, Ireen Wishimanga, sitting in the Siavonga Subordinate Court of the First Class, sentenced Chisala effective 25th September 2026.
Particulars of the offence are that between 30th November and 3rd December 2020 in Chirundu District, Chisala, being a public officer, corruptly obtained K800 as gratification from Jeremiah Donkan Phiri as an inducement not to charge him with a traffic offence and to allow him to use the Chirundu-Lusaka Road.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), which arrested and charged Chisala in July 2024, has warned public officers that public office is a position of trust and must be exercised with integrity.
ACC Head of Corporate Communications, Joseph Mwenya, said the conviction should serve as a warning that engaging in corrupt practices has serious consequences, adding that the Commission will continue to ensure those involved face the full force of the law.
