Two people have died on the spot while two others have sustained serious injuries in a fatal road traffic accident that occurred on Wednesday, 17th September 2026, at around 13:00 hours at Chipunga Village along the Great North Road in Chinsali, involving a Road Development Agency – RDA vehicle.
Also involved was a Howo Sino truck and trailer bearing registration numbers T834 EEM and T321 EFD, which was parked off the road on the yellow line facing north, loaded with 13 bundles of copper belonging to Stunner’s Company Limited.
The truck was reportedly in the custody of a Tanzanian national only identified as Kayumba, who is currently at large, and his passenger Maxon Mushya, 26, of Serenje, who escaped unhurt.
A Toyota Hilux double cabin, registration number GRZ 167 EA, property of the Road Development Agency – RDA, had its front part extensively damaged.
The Toyota Hilux was being driven from south to north by Manasseh Mwenya, 40, of Chiwanda, Isoka District, and had five passengers on board.
Police say two passengers, one male and one female whose details are not yet known, died on the spot after sustaining severe head injuries. Their bodies have since been deposited at Chinsali General Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.
Two other passengers have been identified as Exildah Mutale, 41, of Chimbele Village, Chief Nkula in Chinsali District, who sustained multiple bruises on the head, right hand, a painful chest and general body pains, and Chrispin Bwalya, 51, of Kapili Village, Chief Nkweto in Chinsali District, who sustained a cut on the head, a suspected fractured left arm and general body pains. Both are admitted to Chinsali General Hospital where they are receiving treatment.
According to Muchinga Police Commanding Officer, Lubinda Mayamba, the accident happened when the driver of the Toyota Hilux was overtaking improperly and lost control of the vehicle before hitting into the truck which was parked off the road.
Both motor vehicles are still at the scene.
The driver of the Toyota Hilux reported himself to Isoka Police Station where he is detained for causing death by dangerous driving.
Police have since instituted investigations into the matter.
